Arlie Russell Hochschild

Arlie Russell Hochschild (* 1940) is an American sociologist, professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, and author of ten books, including Stolen Pride: Loss, Shame, and the Rise of the Right (2024). She researched how feelings underpin moral beliefs, cultural norms, and political ideologies. Her work, in the sociological tradition of C. Wright Mills, bridges personal experience and broader societal issues.

Hochschild's coined the term emotional labor, introduced in The Managed Heart (1983), to understand of the interaction between emotion and work. Her research spans family interactions (The Second Shift), workplace culture (The Time Bind), and global care chains (Global Woman). Her most recent books examine the political right in America, with Strangers in Their Own Land (2016) describing the lives of Tea Party supporters.

Hochschild's works have been translated into 17 languages, and she has received honorary degrees from institutions and an induction into the California Hall of Fame.
